Things have changed a lot since the Getaway crew were here.  Private bathrooms and spas are now a feature here. Aldgate House Craft Gallery has now moved to Hampton on the western side of the mountains, and is well worth a visit, as one of the best galleries in the region.

Rose Lindsay owned all the property now known as The Lindsay Estate. The estate includes the original family home and gallery, the painting studio and gardens, which are now owned by the National Trust.

The Etching Studio was built on a neighbouring block of land by mistake, so it is a separate title to the Gallery. The Old Etching Studio Coffee House and Aldgate House Craft Gallery is next to this and serves lunch, morning and afternoon teas.

Rose Lindsay Cottage is the third part of the original estate. Jane, daughter of Norman and Rose Lindsay, designed the home for her mother. Rose commissioned Jane to draw up plans and the building progressed to completion of the stonework, but the project was abandoned in 1954.

The stone shell lay empty for 18 years with trees and shrubs growing among the walls. Norman Lindsay died in 1969 and Rose died some years later. In 1971, the property was bought and the existing house was built in the stonework.

In 1992, the Wotherspoons moved in and renovated the house which opened in 1993 as bed and breakfast accommodation. Australian products and materials are used in many parts of the decoration. Most of the furniture is made by local cabinet makers from recycled Oregon timber.

Fabrics were designed using a wildflower theme; art works include watercolours painted from around 1888 to 1920, giving a special insight into the controversy over Norman Lindsay's work. Wildlife is represented by two living artists, one famous for birds, the other for native wildflowers.

Guest kettles and fridges are stocked with Australian tea, coffee, hot chocolate and home-made biscuits. There is also a common lounge room, with a pianola and fireplace.

Danny Wotherspoon is a Discovery Ranger with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, leading walks in the school holiday programmes. He can let you know some of the native wildlife to look out for.

Rose Lindsay Cottage has been praised as one of the best B&Bs in NSW. The following unpaid or anonymous reviews are listed for your interest.
